Join Us in Building Something That Matters

The BC Bicycle Mechanics Guild Society is forming as a non-profit professional organization dedicated to raising standards, protecting public safety, and supporting bicycle mechanics across British Columbia. We're inviting trusted community leaders and industry professionals to serve as founding directors.

Founding Phase
A Guild Built on Trust and Excellence

This is a pivotal moment for bicycle mechanics in British Columbia. The BC Bicycle Mechanics Guild Society is being established to create lasting positive change in our industry—elevating standards, ensuring public safety, and supporting the professionals who keep our communities rolling.

We're currently assembling a founding board of directors who will shape the Guild's direction and values. This is an opportunity to help build something meaningful from the ground up, with careful governance and a focus on the long term.

Our Core Mission

The Guild exists to serve mechanics, shop owners, and the public through clear standards and collective support.

Promote Safety & Competence

Establish standards that protect the public and elevate the quality of bicycle mechanical work throughout BC.

Support Professional Development

Create pathways for skill-building, mentorship, and ongoing education that help mechanics grow in their craft.

Build Accountability

Foster a culture of integrity and responsibility through clear ethical guidelines and peer support.

Represent Collective Interests

Give mechanics a unified voice in matters affecting the trade, from policy to public perception.

What Directors Do (and Don't Do)
Strategic Governance

Directors provide oversight and strategic direction, not day-to-day operations. This is a governance role focused on stewardship, long-term planning, and ensuring the Guild stays true to its mission.

The board works collaboratively to guide standards development, ethical direction, and organizational stability. It's about thoughtful decision-making and setting the foundation for future success.

Time Commitment

Modest and manageable—a few meetings per year plus occasional review of materials. This is designed to be sustainable for busy professionals.

Financial Requirements

None. This is a voluntary position with no fees, dues, or financial contributions required.

Liability Protection

Directors are protected under standard non-profit liability provisions as established in BC law.

Who We're Looking For

We're seeking individuals who bring wisdom, integrity, and a commitment to building something that serves the greater good. You don't need to be a bicycle mechanic—though industry experience is certainly valued.

Respected in Their Community

Known for fairness, good judgment, and earning trust through consistent action.

Thoughtful and Fair-Minded

Able to weigh multiple perspectives and make balanced decisions that serve the mission.

Committed to Standards

Believe in the value of professional excellence and public trust as foundational principles.

Collaborative Spirit

Ready to work with others to build consensus and move the Guild forward together.

Local Bike Shops: Recommend Someone You Trust

Bike shop owners and managers know their communities best. You work alongside talented mechanics, interact with respected suppliers, and collaborate with community leaders who share your values.

We encourage you to nominate individuals you trust to help guide this organization. Whether it's a senior mechanic, a business mentor, or a community member who understands the bike industry—your recommendations matter.

Help us find the right people to build this Guild with care and integrity.

Initial Board Structure

The founding board will establish roles collaboratively, ensuring the right mix of skills and perspectives to serve the Guild's mission effectively.

President Daniel Tombs

Leads board meetings, represents the Guild publicly, and ensures strategic priorities are advanced.

Vice-President Todd Stoughton

Supports the President, steps in when needed, and takes on specific portfolio responsibilities.

Additional Directors

Bring diverse expertise and perspectives, contribute to policy development, and help guide strategic decisions.

Why This Matters Now
The Industry is Growing

Cycling is booming across BC, and with it comes increased demand for skilled, trustworthy mechanics who can keep riders safe.

Standards Are Inconsistent

Without clear benchmarks, quality varies widely—creating risks for the public and challenges for professionals committed to excellence.

Mechanics Need Support

Individual shops and mechanics often work in isolation. A Guild provides collective voice, shared resources, and professional development opportunities.

Trust Must Be Earned

Public confidence comes from transparency, accountability, and demonstrated commitment to high standards—all goals of the Guild.

What Happens Next

The path from interest to service is simple, transparent, and pressure-free. We want to ensure this is the right fit for everyone involved.

1
Express Interest

Reach out to learn more or indicate your willingness to serve. No obligation at this stage—just conversation.

2
Initial Discussion

We'll talk through the role, answer questions, and explore whether it's a good mutual fit.

3
Founding Board Formation

Selected directors come together to establish governance structure, adopt bylaws, and chart the Guild's course.

4
Guild Launched

With strong leadership in place, the Guild begins its work serving mechanics and the public across BC.

Get Involved

Whether you're considering serving as a director yourself, or you'd like to recommend someone you trust, we'd love to hear from you.

There is no obligation in expressing interest. Questions, suggestions, and thoughtful discussion are always welcome. This Guild is being built carefully, transparently, and with the input of people who care about the future of bicycle mechanics in BC.
